  21.    How do food services and restaurants use radio communica-
  22.    tion?  Fancier restaurants have been known to equip their
  23.    waiters and waitresses with paging  receivers.   Catering
  24.    vans  and  pizza  delivery  trucks are sometimes equipped
  25.    with  two-way  radios.   Fast  food   restaurants,   like
  26.    McDonald's, use low power headsets so workers can commun-
  27.    icate among themselves and with customers.

  29.    Marvin Hand's article, "From Drive-In to Drive-Thru,"  in
  30.    April   15,  1988  Sound  &  Video  Contractor  magazine,
  31.    describes the wireless communications systems used by the
  32.    fast  food  industry.   HM Electronics (HME) of San Diego
  33.    furnishes the equipment I've seen in  McDonald's  restau-
  34.    rants, which is licensed under FCC Part 90.  Order takers
  35.    wear their PR-4 belt-pac COMMUNICATOR transceivers around
  36.    the waste, with attached headset.

  38.    Marvin's article stated that "when a  car  drives  up,  a
  39.    detector  senses  the presence of the vehicle and sends a
  40.    message over cables to a base stations located on a  wall
  41.    inside the restaurant.  The base station then transmits a
  42.    coded tone to each of the units via radio signals."

  44.    The order take is then alerted by a tone in  the  headset
  45.    that  a  customer  is present.  By depressing a button on
  46.    the belt-pac, the order taker  can  greet  the  customer.
  47.    The  customer  places  the order, which is simultaneously
  48.    transmitted to all drive-thru personnel, so food prepara-
  49.    tion can begin immediately.  If there are questions about
  50.    a specific order, belt-pac equipped personnel  can  press
  51.    an  internal intercom button to review the order with the
  52.    order taker.  The intercom mode transmits only  to  other
  53.    workers, not the customer.

  55.    Marvin implies the NiCd batteries in the  belt-pacs  last
  56.    for 18 hours between fast charges!
